Looking Back...

Well folks this will probably be my last post for this blog so I hope you have enjoyed it while it lasted. I actually kind of enjoyed writing my thoughts down but its pretty much solely been on topics I'm not really passionate about. I think if I were to keep a blog up it would have to be themed towards something that I care about or can talk about extensively, like horses, school, or work. Or travelling - that would be more exciting then the previous three. So this experience has shown me that blogging might be something I could really get into, however this particular blog was just for class.

I also learned a lot about the process of blogging and various other sites and opportunities on the Internet, and I am really grateful for that. I agree with Andrea Roman's blog post about finally understanding the use of twitter, but still don't actually use it, as well as things like flickr, linked in, google docs, and audio boo. All of these things will become more and more useful as I further my education and start thinking about a career. I also really enjoyed writing my paper on open access publishing. So far I have been very ignorant to everything the Internet and global connection has given us, and took the things I do know about for granted. I truly learned a lot about the technological revolution that is currently taking place and how it radically changes all processes that came before it. Information should be freely accessible all around the world and the Internet is facilitating that opportunity. If you're for some reason interested in reading my paper on the Open Access Movement, here you go.

So in the end, I really enjoyed this class and gained exposure to so many new things that I will continue looking in to. Social media and on-line communication is the future and its about time I started to explore the possibilities. So who knows, this may not be my only blog yet!

Making My CV

Hey,

So today I am going to share with you my CV and the process I went through to make it. I have actually never needed a CV before because I have been working at the same job since I was 14. That job is for Stonecountry Farm and I never really had to apply or interview because I have been riding there since I was 7. So I started working on this for my ALES 204 class and I did not really know where to begin. I did some research on-line and found useful templates but I still wasn't sure what kind of information I wanted to include. The turning point for me was an ALES lecture where the prof and TA's shared their CV's with us. It was helpful to see how students and professionals in different areas formatted their CV and I chose to use a similar style when writing mine.

At first it was difficult to remember and put together everything I needed and then filter out only the important information. However, I am very happy with how it turned out. I took some points out from Kylie Mcleans blog post on good presentations and used them for my CV, like being to the point, structured and organized. Initially, I think I was trying to add too much when the simpler version is more concise and easy to read. I also thought about it from the employers prospective and ordered my points from most to least important. It is definitely a work in progress and since I am doing this for a class and not an actual job it could also be more tailored to a specific area of interest. This class was a good push for me to actually write this CV so I will have it in the future for other jobs.

PS. The document did not transfer well from word to google docs so the bullets and format looks better on the original :)

Thanks for reading,

Kira Macmillan
